Misrepresentation of Pakistani Culture in Punjabi Movies

In this present age, media in general, movies, and cinema, in particular, is a very powerful and effective force behind the promotion of various social and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Pakistan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cultural</a> changes. Media has a powerful influence over the audience and viewers. And it, thus, forms the ideology and perception of viewers about reality in the desired way. Electronic media has adverse effects on the social, cultural, and moral lives of the viewers in Pakistan.
One of the most important factors of socio-cultural changes in the media is the film industry. The film industry is a source to provide entertainment to people without any class and gender discrimination. In fact, it is considered one of the cheapest sources of entertainment for the common man. It does not only provide some moments of entertainment to the people but also shapes the ideology in their minds. Films or movies can never entirely transmit the culture and the attitudes they represent, but somehow they manage to create its impacts on the lives of people.
People are continuously interacting with such kinds of things like movies and films and they create a smokescreen in the vision of the audience through which viewers perceive the world in a different way. For example, the audience perceives the world in the way it is presented on the cinema screen. But it is totally different from our real world. These films or movies misrepresent our culture. And as a result, our true culture is pushed backward and an alien culture is introduced in our society that is far away from our real culture. This alien culture is not based on our actual norms and values. The representation of a specific social group and their culture should be based on reality. Whatsoever is shown through electronic media should be a realistic manifestation of cultural background and values.
The standard of the Pakistani film industry has been lowered to the large extent due to some reasons. So the producers and directors are presenting such text, images, symbols, and signs which are misrepresenting our culture. These signs and symbols are not part of our culture, still they are shown in our Punjabi movies. And it has become difficult for modern consumers and audiences to relate such types of text, images, signs, and symbols with their surroundings and with their local culture. So they extract desired meanings from these images, signs, and symbols. It affects the lives of audiences and is somehow causative for creating and structuring their public opinion.

 The main objective of this article is to identify and explore the various visual scenes and images from Pakistani Punjabi movies which are misrepresenting the Pakistani culture, values and neglecting the true values of cultural beliefs and norms. This article also tries to describe the effects of this misrepresentation on the mind of viewers.
The local culture of Pakistan is being replaced by an alien culture. This particular article would focus on different movies of different periods. Visual scenes in the text serve as a text for the analysis. Every image would be discussed at length by looking at its denotative and connotative significance with respect to its culture. I will analyze different images taken from different movies. But the main focus would be on the costume of different characters, symbols, signs, settings of the movies, colors in the images, gestures, and expressions of the characters, and their effects on the viewers. Images are selected from different movies representing the visual elements for semiotic analysis. These images and their description are as follows:

The above-shown images are taken from the super hit Punjabi movie “Moula jatt”. In the image (1), the hero is wearing a shalwar kameez. And he is having a gandasa (axe) in his right hand displaying the expression of anger and frustration. The location of the scene is fields. A horse is also there behind him. here, gandasa is the sign of brutality and violence. And the horse standing on the back of the hero is the sign of power.  Both gandasa and horse shows the hero’s love for evil.
 And in the image (2), which is from the same movie Moula jatt, hero is shown helpless lying on the ground. He is wearing a qameez of blue color having stains of blood. Hero is badly injured and qameez is tattered. Here the blood on the chest hero signifies his passion towards violence. Upholding of blood-stained axe by hero signifies his undaunted nature. Expressions and gestures expressed by the hero is symbol of his stubbornness.
In both these images, the men of Pakistan are misrepresented. Every society of the world has instances of bloodshed and violence but men with gandasa are shown only in the Punjabi movies as they have bloodshed, brutality, and violence in their heritage.  People are not as brutal as presented in the movies. Such visual scenes provoke people towards violence. Burton claims “it is a truth often proposed that media contain ‘too much violence and that this violence is in some way to blame for violent social behaviors” (Burton: 2005: 108).

Images (3) and (4) are taken from the Punjabi movie “churiyan”. These images are captured from the song “nere aa zlima” way from that movie. This is a seduction scene. The girl is trying to seduce the boy. Girl is displaying very obscene expressions. Her expressions are foregrounded here and everything around her is pushed in the background. Only her expressions are prominent. And her expressions are reflecting her inner desires and wishes. Girl’s expressions are very significant here. Her open and expressive nature is shown by her expressions. As far as our society and culture is concerned, women are not supposed to be so open and expressive. Women are not allowed to show their inner desires and wishes. They are supposed to suppress their feelings and emotions.
But in the above-pasted pictures, heroine is showing her inner desires, feelings, and emotions. The gestures of the girl are showing authority of women over men. Here woman is signified as an object of sex for men. They are giving us a sense that men can easily be seduced by such women. A totally wrong portrayal of a woman is being portrayed in these scenes. From these pictures, it is clear that our film industry is misrepresenting our true culture. And as a result, an alien culture is introduced in our society. Women are not portrayed according to our cultural values. In fact, they are being portrayed in a manner that is far away from reality.

Images (5) and (6) are taken from the movie “kalu”. This is the scene when the hero and heroine are dancing. The setting of the scene is the fields in a village which shows the peaceful atmosphere of life. Starting from the dress code, boy is wearing qameez and shalwar and a patka around his neck. The girl is wearing kameez and laacha without dupatta. The dress is an important element of any society. Because it shows the culture, ethics, norms, values, ideology, and physiological background of any society. Women usually wear shalwar (trouser) and kameez (a long shirt) with a dupatta (long scarf). But in the images shown above, the girl is wearing indecent clothes without a dupatta.
 On the one hand, they are showing the peaceful atmosphere of the village and on the other hand, they are showing girls out of their true identity. Such visual scenes have given us an impression that these days’ Pakistani people seek their peace, pleasure, and comfort in such obscene scenes. In our culture, girls do not dance in fields with such indecent clothes as shown in this movie. Such obscene things do not happen in our society. These things are not part of our culture. So from these images, it is clear that our Punjabi movies are representing such things that are not part of our culture. In short, our film industry has introduced a culture that is not based on our true cultural values.
All these pictures are not according to our true culture. These are against our true cultural values. Pakistani women do not wear indecent clothes. They do not dance in front of so many people. The relationship of love is taken in the wrong sense. The relationship of love is not supposed to be shown in front of so many people. But in these pictures, love is shown as a tool of sexual harassment. Such a type of vulgarity, which is evident from the above-pasted pictures, is included in our culture now. Such movies are not a source of entertainment for us, because they do not relate to our moral values.
In short, we can say that the culture being represented in Punjabi movies is against the true culture of Pakistan. The pure Pakistani culture is being replaced by an alien culture. Things being shown in these movies tend to obscure the purity of Pakistani culture. In fact, our film industry is trying to blend a foreign culture into our pure Pakistani culture. The underlying messages and meanings provoke our youth to follow the patterns being projected in such movies. Our youth takes the projected patterns as real and creates their world view according to those patterns. Reality is being dislocated from the minds of viewers through the gradual process of misrepresentation. Our youth is deprived of their pure culture and is not even conscious of it.
This misrepresentation is changing the attitudes and ideology of viewers and a new ideology is installed in their minds. The need of the time is that our viewers should be observant enough not to be manipulated by such types of movies. Only in this way, the negative effects of such movies can be minimized. Viewers should be able to disapprove of the promotion of an alien culture and misrepresentation of our pure culture. We should maintain our own identity as a civilized nation by preserving our values and traditions.

Pakistan is one of the famous, well-known, and popular Muslim countries. It is well recognized all over the world. There is a number of elements, aspects, and factors that make Pakistan stand as a distinct, remarkable, and striking country in the world. There are positive as well as negative aspects and elements which make Pakistan appear as a prominent country on the map of the world. Let’s first talk about the negative aspects and factors.
First of all, it’s terrorism that makes Pakistan recognizable in the world even if in negative terms. People from all over the world say that Pakistan is a terrorist country. But they are unaware of the fact that it’s not the entire Pakistan who is a terrorist. In fact, there are some illiterate people who are being involved in terrorism in the name of Islam and Jihad. And Pakistan is the only country who struggled against terrorism so far. There is a decline in the attacks of terrorists from 2013 to 2020. Pakistan witnessed 319 terrorist attacks in 2020. while nearly 4000 terrorism-related incidents were being witnessed in 2013. Now the world has started understanding that Pakistan is not a terrorist country; we are not terrorists. In fact, these are some external forces that are using and exploiting innocent Pakistani in the name of Islam and Jihad. So, Pakistan is no longer labeled as a “terrorist country”.
The bad economy is the second reason why Pakistan is well known in the world. Almost everyone knows Pakistan in terms of the bad economy. The government of Pakistan has failed to provide its people a balanced and stable economy. Pakistan is highly in debt. Natives of Pakistan are not living a comfortable life. Pakistan is ranked as the sixth-worst country in the world to live in. And it’s all because of poor and imbalanced economic conditions.
The third factor that makes Pakistan appear as a prominent country on the map of the world is its illiteracy. Illiteracy itself is a problem that produces more problems like bribery, corruption, injustice, intolerance, and street crimes.
Let’s now talk about the good things; the positive aspects and factors that make Pakistan famous and well-known among other countries. The list of good things and positive aspects includes so many things. they are as follows:

Pakistan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. This beauty makes it famous in the whole world. From east to west and south to north, each and every corner of Pakistan is replete with natural beauty. There is so much natural beauty in Pakistan that it may also be termed as “Land of natural beauty”.  Almost every kind of natural beauty like mountains, hills, rivers, seas, forests, deserts, springs, and lakes is present in Pakistan. Pakistan is home to diversity and a variety of different landscapes. If we see mountains and hills in one corner of Pakistan, then we will also see plain lands in other corners of the world. If we see beautiful and dense forests and jungles, then we will also witness the beautiful landscape of extended deserts.
Along with natural beauty and landscapes, historical places add more beauty to the already beautiful Pakistan and make it more famous in the world. Pakistan is famous for its historical places. These places attract the attention of tourists and visitors. Tourists and visitors, from all over the World, come here to visit these charming and beautiful places. Pakistan has famous historical places like Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque, Shalimar Bagh, Minaret of Pakistan, Hiran Minar Tomb, Yaadgar-e-Shuhda, Rohtas Fort, Noor Mahal, Clock Tower, Pakistan Monument, Tomb of Noor Jahan, and Jahangir’s Tomb. These historical places are very famous and popular all over the world. Tourists from all over the world come here to visit these places.
Pakistan is famous for its cultural diversity. The culture of Pakistan is also something that adds to the beauty and charm of this land. Pakistan consists of four provinces. These four provinces are Punjab, Sindh, Sarhad, and Baluchistan. Every province has its own distinct, captivating, enthralling, and enticing culture. The culture of one province is different and more beautiful than another province. It is difficult to decide which province excels in cultural beauty. People from the farthest and remotest areas come to witness this diversity and variety of cultures.
From losing to winning the match, Pakistan’s cricket team is one of the most unpredictable teams in the world. Pakistan’s unpredictable and exciting team makes it famous in the whole world. There are many cricket teams in the world that are better and worse than Pakistan’s cricket team. But no other country has an unpredictable cricket team like Pakistan that has the spark to surprise everyone.
In a nutshell, Pakistan is a famous and well-known country in each and every corner of the world. It has some positive and negative factors that make Pakistan a prominent country in the world. Other than negative aspects and factors, Pakistan is a remarkable, extraordinary, and striking country in the world. Its positive aspects are enough to explain and elaborate that why and how this country and its people are amazing and unique.

According to new figures from the National Command and Operation Center (<a href="https://ncoc.gov.pk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCOC</a>), 1,780 people have tested positive for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic_in_Pakistan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID-19</a> in the last 24 hours.
Pakistan has reported 39 deaths from the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, while the number of cases has risen to 590,508. The death toll on Sunday rose to 13,205.
Sindh remains the worst-hit province through the pandemic in phrases of cases observed through Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad.

Furthermore, 5,552 people have lost their lives to the epidemic in Punjab 4,424 in Sindh, 2,109 in KP, 508 in Islamabad, 309 in Azad Kashmir, 201 in Balochistan, and 102 in GB.
Pakistan has performed 9,212,480 insect tests and 38,887 coronavirus tests in the last 24 hours. 559,248 coronavirus patients have recovered in Pakistan, but 1,595 patients are in critical condition.

In a weird flip of events, the government in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jammu_and_Kashmir_(union_territory)" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Indian-occupied Kashmir</a> have seized a plane-formed balloon bearing the name of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistan_International_Airlines" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)</a>.
On Tuesday night, the ballots with the name, logo and colour change of the flag bearer were found in Sotra Chak village in the Hiranagar district.
The report stated that it became initially spotted by locals withinside the village who informed the police. Authorities have seized the balloon, even as the matter is below police investigation.

Pakistan’s other Season 6 Super League (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Pakistan_Super_League" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PSL6</a>) matches can be played in September or November due to the lack of a suitable window in March or June.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), as it is called, will host the next 20 matches of the tournament after being postponed due to the Covid-19 incident between players and officials who also helped.
One is the holding of matches in late March, which coincides with Pakistan’s tour of South Africa. PCBs are not good at delaying the list of countries, but they also don’t want to spoil relations with South African cricket. Pakistani players are also allowed to play, so they are unlikely to play in March.

Pakistan will obtain its first consignment of the Indian-manufactured <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford%E2%80%93AstraZeneca_COVID-19_vaccine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oxford AstraZeneca’s Covid-19</a> vaccine through mid-March.
The Indian website reports that Pakistan will receive 16 million free doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine provided by the Indian Serum Center of the GAVI vaccine.
Pakistan is expected to get the remaining doses by June.
“The vaccine association, Gavi, is helping almost half of the world’s children get vaccinated against this deadly and debilitating disease.”

On March 7 it was reported that the hunt for the Covid-19 vaccine for people over 60 will begin on March 10 (today).
“The vaccination of people 60 years and older might be beginning from Wednesday the 10th of March. Vaccinations might be executed in reverse order by age. This means the oldest man or woman who has registered might be vaccinated first,” Head of National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) Asad Umar stated in a tweet.

It’s against our religion. It’s against humanity. It’s against basic human ethics. It’s against the moral values and moral principles of our society. Sexual Harassment is not limited to any particular or specific area or country. It’s a universal disgusting practice that is going on all over the world. It’s not limited to a particular gender. People of both gender, either males or females are being harassed. Moreover, it is not limited to a particular age. People of every age are being harassed in this unsafe, unsecured, and unreliable world.
The Time is long gone when people were safe in this safe place. People are no more safe in this world.  They get harassed everywhere by some soulless, insensitive, and insensible harasser. They not only harass girls, but also aged women and children. They don’t even spare people of their own gender like boys and grown-up men. They are forced to practice such things just because of their lustful nature. They just want to satisfy their sexual needs. It shows their lack of self-control or self-restraint. It also shows the hollowness and barrenness that resides deep down in their characters and souls. They are soulless, wild inhuman being; they don’t even deserve to be called “Human beings”, because they lack the basic humanity which makes us “human”.  They are worse than animals.

Despite this sexual harassment, child abuse is also so common and malicious practice nowadays. Children in general and girls in specific face such inappropriate and unwelcome behavior of some malicious human beings. Girls are being abused and harassed in schools, streets, and markets. They are not even safe in their own homes. They get harassed in their homes by some lustful cousins and even uncles. After all, this happens, girls are being silenced in the name of family reputation, honor, and respect in society. And as result, harassers and abusers become fearless and feel free to do that. It is happening all over the world. And it is happening because children, especially girls, are not aware of all this. So, we must spread awareness to everyone. Everyone needs to be safe in this unsafe world because safety is a basic human right.
These malicious and unwelcome practices really need to be stopped which are going on all over the world. Harassers are encouraged when they find themselves accountable to none. The government should take serious actions against these fearless abusers and harassers. They need to be punished. They need to be sentenced to death. They need to get what they deserve. Little girls need to b safe. Working ladies need to be secured. Dead bodies need not be raped by such lustful, inhuman beings. WE NEED TO BE SAFE.  So, Government should take some serious actions against these wild beings.

And the simple answer to this question is “NO”.
Time is long gone when Pakistan used to be a safe and secure place to visit. Visitors and tourists used to come here without any fear. But now Pakistan is no longer a safe place to visit. There are some security issues in some areas of Pakistan. Because some people of Pakistan have been involved in different evils and crimes which made Pakistan an unsafe place to travel.  There are no risks and security issues while visiting Pakistan.

Terrorism is the first reason to avoid the visit of Pakistan. Terrorism has been so common in the last few years. The government of Pakistan has struggled a lot against terrorism and has controlled the suicide attacks of terrorists to great extent. So many areas of Pakistan are safe from the point of view of terrorism; still, there are some remotest areas where this is happening even today. So, visitors should avoid traveling to Pakistan in general and those areas in specific. They should not endanger their life for the sake of traveling.
The second reason that why Pakistan is not a safe place is its people’s habitual of robbery. There are some criminals in Pakistan who are addicted to robbery. Robbery is so common nowadays that no one is safe from it. Robbers, not even spare visitors and travelers.
The third reason that visitors should avoid visiting Pakistan is kidnapping, rape, sexual harassment, and child abuse. Some lustful people of Pakistan are involved in kidnapping, rapes, sexual harassment, and child abuse. These are very undesired and unwelcome situations. These criminals and lustful people are spoiling the image and reputation of Pakistan. They are soulless empty people. They are hollow at the core.  Their conscience is dead. They don’t have feelings of shame left in them. They not only attack the natives of Pakistan but also the visitors and travelers. So, travelers and visitors must be careful while planning to visit Pakistan.
All these alarming situations make Pakistan what it is not. Pakistan is not a terrible place. It is not a horrible place. It is not a dreadful place. It is not an awful place. Pakistan is beautiful. It is a charming place. It is an attractive place. It is a fascinating place. But these alarming, unwanted and unwelcome situation it what it is not. Pakistan itself is not a bad place to visit. But it’s the people of Pakistan who make it a bad place to visit. It’s not an unsafe place, but its people make it an unsafe place. These days Pakistan is not a safe place to visit. Tourists and visitors should not visit Pakistan these days. They should wait till things get better. From now on, they should act upon the notion “Stay home, stay safe”.
