Atanas Skatov, originally from Bulgaria, died during the K2 trip on Friday. The Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) said 42-year-old Skatov’s body fell into an area where rescue teams could not reach him.

Earlier on Friday, an army helicopter set off to explore the area as Skatov disappeared. An army found his body and transported it by helicopter from K2 Base Camp to Skardu.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva expressed her condolences to Skatov’s family and friends on social media.

“My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Atanas #Skatov. Admiration for the power of his soul, his achievements and his relentless willingness to ascend to the top will never be forgotten! Let’s respect his memory! # K2winter2021 # k2winterexpedition2021,”Zaharieva tweeted.

Skatov previously climbed Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

The height of Everest is 8,848 meters or 29,029 feet. At an altitude of 8,611 meters (28,251 feet), K2 in Pakistan is the second-highest mountain in the world behind Everest.
